The book was written not when UNIX was just starting out, but when it was already popular enough to be worthy of a book published for the masses of new users that were coming in. Although that philosophy can’t be written down in a single sentence, at its heart is the idea that the power of a system comes more from the programxcion among programs than from the programs themselves.
